What Is a MIAM and Why Might You Need One?

A MIAM stands for a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting. It is usually the first step before making certain family court applications.

During a MIAM, a qualified mediator will:

  • Explain how mediation works
  • Discuss your situation and concerns
  • Explore whether mediation may help resolve issues
  • Assess whether mediation is suitable and safe
  • Answer any questions you may have about the process

Many people are surprised to learn that mediation can help resolve issues more quickly and less stressfully than court proceedings. Even where mediation is not suitable, the MIAM helps individuals understand their options.

MIAMs are available online and can often be arranged quickly. In some cases, Legal Aid may cover the cost.

All Families Mediation offers online MIAMs and mediation services across the UK, supporting families through separation with a practical and child-focused approach.
